From a magazine article, a completed form begins to appear.

Yasuichi Takami’s F-4B Phantom building article is a valuable record of jet-aircraft solid model making preserved in the magazine Koku Fan. It is not merely an introduction to a completed model. It preserves a way of thinking, a working sequence, and a method for communicating how the form of an F-4B Phantom could be carved from wood.

In solid model making, a finished model alone does not fully reveal the decisions behind its form. A building article, however, can preserve how the maker read the aircraft, where the work began, and in what order the form was developed.

The F-4B Phantom brought new formal challenges to solid model making.

Solid models are often associated with the age of propeller aircraft. Yet Takami’s choice of the F-4B Phantom as the subject of a building article shows that jet aircraft, too, were considered possible subjects for wooden solid models.

The form of the F-4B Phantom differs greatly from that of a propeller aircraft. Its intakes, thin wings, long fuselage, tail arrangement, and continuous flow from nose to rear must all be read as a three-dimensional form within the wood. Later completed model photographs provide a useful visual guide to this difficulty and possibility.

In solid model making, a different aircraft demands a different reading of form. Wing thickness, fuselage volume, the flow from nose to tail, the treatment of landing gear, and the overall posture of the aircraft all vary from subject to subject. A completed model photograph allows us to see how such decisions are gathered into a single form.

Reading the F-4B article gives us an entry point into how Takami approached the form of a jet aircraft. But by also looking at other completed navy aircraft models, we can place that approach in a broader context and consider how he distinguished one aircraft from another as a wooden solid model.
