Wheels temporarily assembled on the float trolley

Wheels temporarily assembled on the float trolley

The wheel hubs were temporarily fitted into the main wheel tires and provisionally set onto the trolley frame.

The wheel hubs were also temporarily fitted into the tailwheel tires and provisionally set onto the supporting strut.

After this, each part will be disassembled again, painted separately, and then formally assembled.

Wheels

The tires and wheels were shaped using files and sandpaper.

On the left are the hubs for the main wheels, and in the center are the main wheel tires. On the right are the tailwheel tire and hub.

Material blocks for the float trolley tires

Material blocks for the float trolley tires

The block on the left is the material for the wheel hubs, and the block on the right is the material for the tires.

The material is synthetic wood.

The wheel hubs are made by shaping the square block into a round rod and then cutting it to the required thickness.

The tires are made by cutting the block into four pieces, shaping them into discs, and then opening a central hole with a gouge to receive the wheel hub. They are then finished with files and sandpaper so that the hub fits properly.

Float trolley frame

Float trolley frame

The trolley used to support the float section was assembled by soldering brass rods.

Wooden pads are attached where the bottom of the floats rests, and four wheels are fitted on both sides.

When the aircraft is brought ashore, the floats appear to be placed on this trolley, and a removable tailwheel is attached to the rear of the float in order to handle the aircraft on land.

Panel line engraving

Panel line engraving

After the surfacer coat had dried, panel line engraving was carried out.

First, the positions of the panel joints were sketched in pencil.

Then the panel joints were engraved with a scriber, and finally the lines were carefully traced again with a design knife. This produces a clean and crisp engraved line.

Joining the nose section

Joining the nose section

The newly made nose section was completed and joined to the main body.

Polyester putty was applied into the gaps and is currently drying. Even with polyester putty, sufficient drying time is necessary, otherwise sink marks may appear after painting.

[2007-12-02 11:29:46] No.644

Installation of the rotating gun position canopy

Installation of the rotating gun position canopy

The rotating gun position canopy at the tip of the nose was installed.

The barrel of the MG 15 has been made detachable, so it has been removed here.

With this, the newly made nose section is complete, and it will now be joined to the main body.
