Trial fitting the wheels to the float trolley

Original post text: Kazu Fukuda / English translation

The wheel hubs were temporarily fitted into the main wheel tires and set temporarily on the trolley frame.
The wheel hub was also temporarily fitted into the tail wheel tire and set temporarily on the support strut.
After this, the parts will be disassembled, painted separately, and then assembled permanently.

Material blocks for the float trolley tires

Material blocks for the float trolley tires

Original post text: Kazu Fukuda / English translation

The block on the left is the material block for the wheel hubs, and the block on the right is the material block for the tires. The material is synthetic wood.
The wheel hubs are made by shaping this square block into a round rod and then cutting it to the required thickness.
For the tires, the block is cut into four pieces, shaped into discs, and a hole for fitting the wheel hub is opened in the center with a round chisel. The parts are then finished with files and sandpaper so that the hubs fit properly.

Float trolley frame

Float trolley frame

Original post text: Kazu Fukuda / English translation

The trolley for supporting the floats was assembled by soldering brass rods.
Wooden pads are fitted where the bottoms of the floats rest, and four wheels are attached on both sides.
When the actual aircraft was hauled ashore, the floats seem to have been placed on a trolley like this, with removable tail wheels attached to the rear of the floats for handling the aircraft on land.

Engraving the panel lines

Engraving the panel lines

Original post text: Kazu Fukuda / English translation

After the surfacer coat had dried, I engraved the panel lines. First, the positions of the skin joints were sketched in pencil.
Then the panel lines were engraved with a scriber, and finally carefully traced once more with a design knife. This produces clean, sharp engraved lines.

Joining the nose section

Joining the nose section

Original post text: Kazu Fukuda / English translation

The newly made nose section was completed, so it was joined to the main body.
Polyester putty has been applied to the gaps and is currently drying. Even with polyester putty, sufficient drying time is necessary; otherwise, shrinkage may appear after painting.

Attaching the rotating gun position canopy

Original post text: Kazu Fukuda / English translation

The canopy for the rotating gun position at the nose tip was attached. The MG 15 barrel is removable, so it has been taken off here.
With this, the newly made nose section is complete, and it will now be joined to the main body.
