===== 01 Solid-Model Build Process ===== When building a solid model for the first time, it can be unclear where to start or what sequence to follow, but the workflow shown in this diagram is generally accepted. Beyond this, you will also need a variety of tools, and you should decide on a dedicated workspace. In this series, we will describe the method of solid-model building with reference to the late Mr. Kazu Fukuda’s build notes. For the enjoyable task of aircraft selection, we will proceed with the Fw 190 D-9. Let’s look for reference books at online bookstores. Prepare drawings as well. Here we will use 1/50, the standard scale for solid models. Because we will create cutting patterns (templates) from the drawings, make several photocopies. ^ {{:assets:en-overall-workflow.jpg?640&nolink|}} ^ | **Figure 1-1 Overall Workflow** |\\ ===== 02 Mock-up & Stock Cutting ===== The D-type (D-9) appeared in the late war as a performance-improved development of the A-type. As most airframes were used by home-defense units, comparatively few period photographs survive. The preserved-aircraft photos in *Aero Detail* by Shigeru Nohara are extremely helpful. The most notable features of the D-9 are the annular radiator associated with the switch to a liquid-cooled engine, and the insertion of an approximately 50 cm fuselage extension at the rear to maintain the center-of-gravity balance. The photos show how the stock is allocated (cut) for each block. For the rear fuselage, first cut it to the same length as the A-type, then separate it at the specified station and insert the extension piece (spacer).\\ {{:assets:001.jpeg?nolink&400|}}\\ ---- For fuselage block (1), two thick boards are laminated; this makes the center plane unambiguous. Making the propeller from the large block (7) is a distinctive method used by Mr. Fukuda.
